Gonna miss you Larry alot. You were a good friend, and I will never forget you. I say"i"now...well you know because Brandon is probably with you right now. I know how much he respected you, no matter what. He loved to hear you tell your stories. He would laugh so hard. Tell Brandon I love him and love you to big guy. So long for now.

In my mind, he’ll always be “Strawberry Larry,” because that’s how we met, back in the 1980s, over his strawberries. Every visit to the farm was special because he was always innovating, eager to show off whatever he was coaxing from the land he loved. I moved away years ago and hadn’t seen him in too long a while but will never forget sitting in his greenhouse during a late, bitter Pennsylvania winter, warmed by a hot stove, surrounded by fragile seedlings, talking of Spring. He was a genuine original – sweet, funny and wise –and he will be missed.

When I was in grade school my cousin Billy Shalata and I would walk to the Denmon farm in order to watch Uncle Pat call in the cows and milk them. We would watch him feed them grain (I still remember the smell) and hook up the cows to the milkers. He'd squirt the cats with milk and give them a drink. Then he'd tell us we coukd into the hay barn where we slid down the hay on cardboard. One day Larry was up in the barn walking across the huge wood beam on the second story. He had made himself a hideaway in the hay bales up there. Of course us little kids were curious but I didn't want to walk the beam. We just slide down and looked for kittens in the barn.
