Obituary of Mable Eleanor Puterbaugh

Mable Eleanor Puterbaugh, age 100 of Harveys Lake, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2021 at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas. Better known as Eleanor, she was the first of three children born on the homestead on Noxen Road to Walter Samuel Puterbaugh who died in 1968 and Margaretta Murphy Puterbaugh who died in 1972. Known as Eleanor, in later years, to family she was Nonee. When she was old enough to sew, she sat with Grandma at her kitchen table making quilt blocks by oil lamps. Her house was the first on Noxen Road to get electricity. Then her Dad and Mr. Schultz worked nights to put in their bathroom. Eleanor graduated from Laketon High School and went with her class to New York City and the Worlds' Fair of 1939. During the war she lived in Bridgeport, CT working at G.E. where she was the first girl to be put into the Engineer room. Eleanor worked in and managed their store at Sunset and was Postmaster at Shawanese, 18654 for 26 years. In the late 60's and early 70's, she belonged to Harmony Chapter 58 at Wyoming Order of the Eastern Star. Eleanor held different offices while working up to Worthy Matron where she served for 1 year. She went to the Alderson Methodist Church before it was United Methodist. From the time she was baptized, it was her church. Eleanor joined in 1955. She held different offices over the years and was President of the Alderson United Methodist women for over 20 years. Interment will be in the Perrego Cemetery, Harveys Lake, where she has been a trustee and keeper of the books for many years. Friends may call on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc., corner of routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek. A private family service will follow the viewing with Pastor Ken Brown, Alderson United Methodist Church, and retired, Reverend William Kennard, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
