Obituary of Edith J. Hoover

Edith J. (Smith) Hoover, age 88 of Lake Township, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015 at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas. Mrs. Hoover was born in Trucksville on September 20, 1926 and was the daughter of the late Francis and Hattie Ide Smith. Edith graduated from Kingston Township High School in 1944 and attended Roberts Wesleyan College in North Chili, NY. She was an active member of the Outlet Free Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, worked with children and youth, and took part in the Women's Missionary Society. Edith was also a member of the WCTU. She had a beautiful voice and used her talent by singing with her sisters and solo at weddings, church, and other special occasions. Edith was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Many would remember her from picking and selling strawberries and blueberries. Her home was always open to guests, including family, friends, traveling ministers, and missionaries. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Ellis Hoover, brothers, Donald, Stacy, and Howard Smith, sisters, Mary Heberling, Araminta Martz, and Ruth Stevenson. Edith is survived by daughter, Sandra Elderkin and her husband Richard of Attleboro, MA; brother, Clinton Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; sisters, Ida Hughes and Phoebus Oberst, both of Jamestown, NY; grandchildren, Richard Ellis Elderkin and his wife Laura of Lake Township and Russell W. Elderkin of Attleboro, MA; great-grandson, Caleb Richard Elderkin; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 10:00AM from the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc., corner of routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek, with Pastor Dennis Scheuermann and Pastor Skye Rogers, officiating. Friends may call Wednesday from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Idetown Cemetery, Lehman Twp. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to the Outlet Free Methodist Church, 531 Lehman Outlet Rd, Dallas, PA 18612.
