Obituary of Elmer Smiga

Elmer Smiga, Sr., age 79 of Meadow Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dallas, passed away peacefully Friday, November 15, 2013 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Mr. Smiga was born in Plymouth on October 14, 1934 and was the son of the late John and Anna Uhrin Smiga. Elmer graduated from Plymouth High School in 1952 and served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1957. He was a proud member of IBEW Local 1319 for more than 50 years. Elmer loved to fish and spend time with his family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette Smiga, and brothers, John and Joseph Smiga. Elmer is survived by his sister, Bernadine Oakley of Plymouth Twp.; sons, Elmer Smiga, Jr. of Dorrance Twp. and Gary Smiga and his wife Susan of Annandale, VA; sister-in-law, Nancy Space of Hunlock Creek; daughter-in-law, Patricia of Mountaintop; grandchildren, Elmer III, Kimberly, Meghan, Brian, Shannon, and Gavin; great-grandson, Kristopher Smiga; nieces, Ellen and Ann and dear friend, Lisa. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc., corners of routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek. The family requests memorial contributions to be made to the Alzheimer's Association-Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, 57 N. Franklin St. Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
