Janet was my sister, my only sibling, my closest living relative. But most of all we were life-long friends, friends who supported each other through both the good and the bad. Some of you knew Janet in different ways & at different times, either as relatives or co-workers or friends, and for some part of her life. But as her older brother I knew Janet longer than anyone else …her whole life. We grew up together in Brooklyn, went to the same Catholic grammar school & church, and watched each other follow our own paths & dreams & struggles in life. We became distant in miles but not in our hearts. There was always a bond between us, no matter the distance. Because that was the kind of person Janet was: kind, caring, and supportive - often more caring & concerned about others than about herself. Even in her pain last week, when she knew I would be out, she insisted that I call her when I got home, to make sure that I was safe. Janet is safe now, safe and free of pain and suffering and worry. She is finally, finally, at peace. And we are left with memories, with tears & grief- the price we pay for loving someone, for being loved by them, and for losing them. Losing Janet leaves a dark hole in our hearts. But my hope & prayer is that the emptiness & pain will be replaced, filled with warm memories, memories of the caring, concern , love & kindness that Janet showed to others. We can’t defeat death. But while we still live, we can’t let death define or defeat us. We need to cherish the precious gift of life we were given, the gift that we survivors still possess- and to cherish & care for each other. The best thing we can say about someone who has passed is that the world is a better place because that person lived. Janet made the world a better place in the lives of the people she knew and touched, and that’s how I’ll always remember her. Goodbye Janet. I’ll miss you deeply, and I’ll aways love you…
