Eliza Jane Burke, age 69 of Newport Twp., passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Burke was born in Plymouth on April 29, 1946 and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Oshirak Dempsey.

Eliza graduated from Plymouth High School and received her associates degree in business from Luzerne County Community College. She was employed for many years by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Bureau of Disability. She and her husband, Joseph Burke, Jr., would have celebrated their 53rd Wedding Anniversary on March 10th. Eliza's greatest love in life was her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, Frank Dempsey.

In addition to her husband, Eliza is survived by daughter, Jane Marko and her husband John; son, Joseph Burke, III and his wife Michele; sisters, Irene Frisbie and her husband Leonard, Anna Magill, Barbara Powell and her husband Richard, and Carol Dempsey; brother, Joseph Dempsey, Jr. and his wife Martha; sister-in-law, Sonya Dempsey; grandchildren, Kathryn, Benjamin and Joelle Olivette.

As per her request, a private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc., corner of routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek.

The family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Medical Oncology Prescription Assistance Fund, 382 Pierce St., Kingston, PA 18704.
