Obituary of Daniel Joseph Baluta

Daniel J. Baluta, 64, of Sweet Valley, PA, passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Harveyville, Scalppin Town, Shickshinny, Dan was the son of the late Daniel A. Baluta and Jean Gavrish. A dedicated public servant, Dan served as a Sergeant at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for 35 years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his steady presence, strong work ethic, and sense of duty.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Melissa A. Ritsick; his stepson, Matthew J. Hawk Sr., wife Rachel; and his cherished grandson, Matthew Jr., who brought him immense pride and joy.

A devoted animal lover, Dan's heart extended to all creatures. He leaves behind his loyal dog Sheba, his cat Patches, and his beloved chickens - affectionately known as "the girls."

Dan was a passionate antique and fossil collector, often wandering the wilderness and old strip mines in search of rare and unusual finds. His adventurous spirit led him to hop trains in his youth, a reflection of his free soul and fearless heart.

Dan will be remembered for his kind nature, unique perspective, and the quiet wisdom he shared with those lucky enough to know him. His memory lives on in the stories he told, the treasures he found, and the love he gave freely.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who showed such compassion and care for Dan in his final days.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Connor St., Pringle, PA 18704, with Rev. Fr. Mykhaylo Prodanets, officiating.

In honor of Dan's love for animals, donations may be made to Blue Chip Animal Refuge, 974 Lockville Rd., Dallas, PA 18612.
